Lunenburg crash claims life of Chase City man

SoVaNow.com / June 28, 2017
A 32-year-old Chase City man died in an early Saturday morning wreck on Route 40 in Lunenburg County near the Town of Victoria.

Joshua P. Smith, the driver of a 2006 Pontiac, was ejected from his vehicle when it collided with another automobile traveling in the opposite direction on Route 40. Smith was transported to VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill where he was treated for his injuries. He died later that morning.

He was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened.

The crash occurred at 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 on Route 40, west of Route 635. Smith was traveling along Route 40 when he collided with a 2001 Ford Taurus moving in the opposite direction. The Pontiac then ran off the left side of Route 40, striking a utility pole and several trees.

The female driver of the Ford Taurus was transported to VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. She was not identified by Virginia State Police.

The cause of the crash remains under review. State Trooper S.C. Hudson is handling the investigation.
