Malicious wounding leads to arrest

At approximately 9:00 a.m.on Saturday, July 7, authorities from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police responded to Ninth Street in Virgilina for a report of a disturbance at a residence, according to Sheriff Fred Clark.

Upon arriving on scene, Deputy J. Garber spoke with a male victim who stated that he been severely beaten during an altercation with a male individual who had been staying at his residence.

As a result of the physical altercation, the victim discharged a firearm and shot the suspect in the leg in attempts to stop the individual from assaulting him.

The suspect was transported to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital for treatment where he was later released and placed into custody.

Stephen Cullinane, 28, of Oxford, N.C. was arrested on charges of felonious assault/malicious wounding, violation of a protective order, and disorderly conduct. Cullinane is being held at Blue Ridge Regional Jail with no bond.

The investigation is continuing and more charges are pending.
