Man arrested after crashing car in high-speed chase / June 24, 2020
A high-speed chase through Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties Monday afternoon ended with a crash and criminal charges against the driver.

Yusuf Shabazz Jones, 25, of Washington, D.C. was picked up on felony warrants from Chesterfield after he fled the scene of a crash. It came after a chase that began on Interstate 85 and ended when he wrecked his vehicle near the intersection of Cumbia Avenue and North Drive in Brodnax.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Baird was patrolling on I-85 when he witnessed a four-door sedan heading northbound on the interstate traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Baird pursued the car as it left I-85 heading east on Highway 58, and called for assistance from the La Crosse Police Department and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office as well as additional deputies with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Chris Whittemore with the MCSO said Jones fled the scene immediately after he crashed the car, which was stolen from the D.C. area.

K-9 units from both the Mecklenburg and Brunswick sheriff’s offices were deployed and tracked the suspect for some distance before losing the scent. Whittemore did not say where Jones was found, only that he was picked up later Monday evening on outstanding warrants from Chesterfield where he faces charges of breaking and entering, trespassing and grand larceny. He was also wanted on a fugitive warrant.

Before Jones was located, both county sheriff’s offices had issued a warning to residents in the Brodnax area to lock their doors, secure any outbuildings and report anyone or anything suspicious.

In addition to the charges pending in Chesterfield, Jones faces felony eluding and reckless driving charges in Mecklenburg County, and he was sought by the U.S. Marshal’s office on unspecified charges.
