SoVaNow.com / April 11, 2018
The Virginia Employment Commission monthly jobs report for February offers some good news for Mecklenburg and surrounding counties as job creation and workforce participation picked up.

The unemployment rate for Mecklenburg County fell 0.6 percent between January and February — from 5.8 percent to 5.2 percent as the county added 88 new jobs and 27 workers joined the labor force.

In nearby Halifax County, the unemployment rate fell from 5.2 percent in January to 4.8 percent, as 100 people joined the local job rolls, and the civilian labor force experience an upswing adding 46 workers.

Other neighboring communities reported similarly positive results on the jobs front, according to data released Wednesday by the Virginia Employment Commission.

To the east, Brunswick County also saw its unemployment rate dip to 5.7 percent, from 6.0 percent in January. The same was true in Lunenburg County, where the jobless rate fell to 4.1 percent in February from 4.6 percent in January.

The positive trend largely held across the state, with unemployment dropping to 3.3 percent statewide. A year ago in February 2017, the unemployment rate was nearly a full point higher, at 4.2 percent.

The national rate dipped to 4.4 percent in February from 4.5 percent in January, down 0.5 percent from the 4.9 percent rate of February 2017.
