SoVaNow.com / July 25, 2013With summer speeding by, thoughts begin to turn to the opening of local schools and new information about their operation.
Public schools open this year on Monday, Aug. 19 with the first semester ending on on Dec. 20 which is the beginning of the two week Christmas vacation.
Teachers begin the new school year on Monday, Aug. 12 with new teachers undergoing orientation on Wednesday and Thursday of Aug. 7 and 8.
After two full weeks of school Monday, Sept. 2, Labor Day will be a school holiday. Students will also enjoy an early 1 p.m. dismissal on Monday, Sept. 16 in order that teachers can have an afternoon work session.
Other holidays include Columbus Day, Oct. 12; Election Day, Nov. 5 (new); Thanksgiving Nov. 28, 29; Lee Jackson, Jan. 17; Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 20; President’s Day Feb. 17; Spring break April 14-18 and Memorial Day, May 26.
School ends on May 30 with graduation scheduled for Saturday, May 31.
Both Halifax County High School and Halifax County Middle School will host their Open House activities on Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. All the elementary schools will have their Open House events on Thursday, Aug. 14 from 12:30-6:30 p.m.
The price of student lunches will rise slightly to $2 with breakfast prices being $1.25. For adults breakfast will cost $2 while adult lunches will rise to $3.50. The charge for milk is fifty cents.
Student fees at Halifax County Middle School are $7 for arts fees for grade 6-8. A $20 fee is charged for band and chorus while band or chorus (one only) in grades 7 and 8 will cost $12. In grade 6 band or chorus fees (one only) are $6.
Hallway locker fees at the HCMS will cost $1 while physical education fees for students in grades 7 and 8 are $4.50. Science fees for students in grades 6-8 will be $6.
At Halifax County High School the art fee for students in grades 9-12 is $10 while the music fee is $12. Physical education fees are $4.50 while science fees are $8. Senior Class dues are $35.
Optional fees at the high school include $130 for driver education (Behind the Wheel) and $20 for student driver parking spots.
