Nathalie man sentenced on rape charge / November 23, 2020
A Nathalie man was given a three-year active prison term on Thursday for statutory rape of a child 13-14 years old and six more months behind bars for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

David Williams was found guilty in June and sentenced this week in Halifax County Circuit Court. Williams pleaded no contest to the Class 4 felony charge of a carnal knowledge of a child, without force, and three juvenile delinquency counts, each misdemeanors. The offenses took place in July 2019.

Williams’ total sentence was 10 years, 18 months, with all but three years and six months suspended by the court.

In other court decisions Thursday and Friday:

» William Edward Howell, 49, of South Boston pleaded guilty and was given a five-year active prison term for malicious wounding, part of a 20-year total sentence. Howell also received a 10-year sentence, with all time suspended, for obstruction of justice related to drug activity.

The crimes took place in January, when South Boston Police were summoned to a Crescent Drive residence to investigate a domestic disturbance involving a woman who had been shot in the head. Police discovered a suspected methamphetamine lab at the home.

After serving time in prison, Howell will be required to undergo two years probation.

» Christopher Craig Whitlow of South Boston was sentenced to a 10-year prison term, all suspended other than time already served, on charges of manufacturing a controlled substance. As part of his sentence, Whitlow was committed to a drug abuse diversion program.

» Jason Edward of Nathalie was sentenced to a 20-year term, all suspended other than time served, on charges of identity theft and obtaining money under false pretenses.

» Michele Doss Barnett of South Boston was sentenced to an active jail term of three years on six drug-related charges including manufacturing a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and drug possession.
