National Night Out gets new chairman / December 09, 2010
The National Night Out event is getting a new chairman.

Becky S. Martin, who has been involved for many years and organizer for several, is stepping down to focus more on her small children. Stepping up on Jan. 1 is Stephanie Tucker-Lewis.

Martin said she thinks NNO is strong enough to handle a transition.

“I appreciate the support of the law enforcement, fire-EMS, media and community in assisting to getting NNO where it is today. This is truly a joint effort, and without everyone it could not be the success it is,” Martin said in a written statement. She will remain active with the group.

Martin said the annual event is designed to help the community show its appreciation to law enforcement and public safety workers while putting law enforcement in the midst of the community.

“Instead of writing a ticket,” Martin said, a police officer is socializing with children.

The festive event has been at the fairgrounds for two years.

Tucker-Lewis works at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center as a Middle College instructor of GED students, as an instructor for Mary Baldwin College classes there and as a soccer coach at the high school. She has been involved in National Night Out for two years.

The annual event is always held the first Tuesday of August, and Tucker-Lewis said she welcomes new input and new volunteers.
