New logo, motto for Halifax County schools
SoVaNow.com / October 08, 2012The Halifax County Public School division has a new logo and a new motto, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merle Herndon announced Friday.
The new motto: “Children First for a Brighter Future.”
The new logo, superimposed on a dark blue background, consists of students racing toward the sky as they follow a comet.
The logo will be printed on all school brochures, letterhead and business cards of employees. It was designed by a former Halifax County student, Amy Zirkle, who graduated from the high school with the Class of 1999.
Amy, the daughter of Bill and Nancy Zirkle, is currently employed by PAC-12 in San Francisco, California as an Interactive Marketing Manager.
Zirkle earned her Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from the R. H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland in 2002. She then received her associate degree of specialized technology in graphic design from The Art Institute-Pennsylvania in York, Pennsylvania in 2009.
CommentsI hope that the school board will have the good sense to make sure that all old paper products that don't have this new symbol are used up before new are printed!. What a waste of money!

CommentsWow, what a waste of money and time. How much is THIS costing the school system? Logo change? Honestly, someone needs to stop all of these "changes" before the Halifax County School system goes broke, which is sure to happen in the months to come. Shame on all of you who approved this and who sit back and do nothing but let new leadership run over you and the county. I'm sure neighboring school systems are laughing at us. A new logo?Yeah, right that's "helping the kids." Laughable.

CommentsI was under the impression that the county -- and the Board of Education -- were struggling to cover existing costs. Yet someone thinks it's a 'good idea' to add totally unnecessary printing/distribution costs to the expense column?
And just out of curiosity, did the new logo and motto cost, as well?

CommentsA new logo....but some kids in this county have no textbooks....where do priorities lie these day...

CommentsDr. Merle strikes again with a great idea. NOT. What is wrong with her brain. Save money not waste it on useless logos. And if you do not listen to the study to save money, why have it. Dumb Donkeys.

CommentsI sure hope that someone has the good sense to ask the hard questions and check the background of this new super. Why not check her previous record in Lynchburg City Schools? After being in the Lychburg City School system for over a decade, why come to Halifax County? Surely there were opportunities there for advancement. As informed citizens, it's your right to know. Perhaps the newspaper will do some digging. Good luck.
