One dead after I-85 pursuit / July 22, 2020

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a high-speed chase through Brunswick County early Monday morning.

Troopers with the Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash, which happened around 5:21 a.m. Monday. It ensued from a traffic pursuit initiated by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the State Police preliminary investigation, a 2019 Porsche Cayenne driven by 29-year-old Brian Alexander Thompson II of Hampton was traveling at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 when he lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway.

Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car when it overturned near the tree line. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries. The passenger was airlifted to VCU Hospital in Richmond where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police are investigating the fatal crash only, and the department directed inquiries about the pursuit to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s office has released no details about the events leading up to the chase.
