Options eyed for 2018 Mecklenburg school calendar

SoVaNow.com / December 20, 2017

The Mecklenburg County School Board will consider two options for the 2018-19 school year calendar, with proposed dates of Aug. 9 and Aug. 13 for the start of school.

Trustees were asked to review the two options at their monthly meeting Monday night in Boydton. They are expected to approve the 2018-2019 school year calendar at their regular meeting in January.

Under calendar option one, the school year would begin on Aug. 9, and end on May 22, 2019. Under option two, school begins Aug. 13, and ends May 22, 2019.

For both option one and option two, the first semester ends Dec. 21, and the second semester begins Jan. 7, 2019. Graduation with both options is set for May 25.

Option one and two both include seven teacher work days, 4-1/2 professional development days, a half-day per semester for parent-teacher conferences, and 7-1/2 days for special meetings, expos, carnivals, field trips and other duties assigned by the school principal or school division to the teaching staff.

The parent-teacher meetings are set on Oct. 24, and March 20, 2019 at the elementary schools, Oct. 25 and March 21 at the middle schools, and Sept. 12 and Feb. 12 or 13 at the high schools.

The school holidays for the school year are Labor Day, Sept. 3, Thanksgiving break, Nov. 21-23, winter break, Dec. 22-Jan. 6, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 21, President’s Day, Feb. 18, and spring break April 15-19.

In the event of snow or other emergencies, the school make-up days are Nov. 21, Feb. 18, and April 15-17.
