Storefront windows in Downtown Halifax are showcasing historical photos of the county seat. The Halifax Hunt photo display is one of several projects being undertaken by the Here’s Halifax! Beautification Working Group. There are at least three more photos to be displayed.

Each of the photos hints at past businesses that operated out of Downtown Halifax storefronts — giving way over time to the new businesses that exist today in town. When the photo showcase is complete, residents will be invited to enter a contest to match the photos with hints on Halifax business history. The winner will receive a gift certificate to shop with Halifax Village merchants.

“The week of Thanksgiving is really hectic,” said Barbara Bass, president of the Halifax County Historical Society, which is assisting with the project. Bass expressed the hope of completing the project next week.

She has already noticed families stopping and looking at the vintage photos.

Beautification Working Group members hope to instill community understanding and appreciation for the past, present, and future. One way is to encourage people to view photographs placed in the store windows.

In addition to the large photographs in place, there will be smaller photographs and posters.

The Historical Hunt will offer what Town Manager Carl Espy called “Halifacts on historic places, people or events which are unique here.”
