Plans under way for annual HCCA Walk of Hope

SoVaNow.com / July 29, 2013
Plans for the ninth annual Halifax County Cancer Associations (HCCA) Walk for Hope are under way, and it’s not too late to sponsor this year’s event or to be a part of the event to be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Halifax County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m, followed by the walk at 10:30 a.m.

This year’s event will showcase lots of great music, arts and crafts vendors, food, kids activities, cruise in car show, stories of inspiration, fellowship and lots more. A dunking booth with some locals will also be featured this year.

The association is asking everyone in the community to participate in this event. According to Michelle Epps, HCCA fundraising coordinator, “This is a family fun-oriented event with activities for all ages.” The HCCA promises a day full of fun for everyone and a time to honor and remember local cancer patients.

“Businesses and organizations can form teams and challenge each other or you can walk individually as well,” Sharon Blosser, HCCA director of patient services, said.

The first 200 with $100 or more in pledges will get a free event t-shirt. Walk for Hope pledge envelopes may be picked up at Triangle Florist, Gazette- Virginian, Eclipse Hair Studio, Dr. Neil Schacht’s office, Gregory Florist, The Scissor Shack and Halifax County Cancer Association office.

In order to become a sponsor, a business, church, organization, etc. whose name is included on the back of the event shirt, Epps said sponsors are asked to contribute $250 or more to the walk.

The deadline for sponsorship’s is July 31.

Those interested in becoming sponsors may mail a check to HCCA, PO Box 1891, Halifax, VA 24558 or call 470-3283 or 476-2714.

“We are always here for our community and anyone diagnosed with this dreadful disease. All funds raised stay in Halifax County to assist with travel expenses, cancer related supplies and medications, wigs, turbans, prosthesis, medical bills and much more,” Epps said. “Please consider helping your local cancer association by making a tax-deductible donation and/or sponsoring our ninth annual Walk for Hope.”

Walkers have the opportunity of walking on behalf of a cancer patient and requesting one half of the money they raise to be earmarked for that patient, Blosser said. The patient would submit cancer related expenses for payment. Anyone wishing to get additional information for this year’s Walk for Hope may contact Epps at 470-3283 or email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call our office at 476-2714.
