Police thwart wallet theft in progress / September 11, 2017

South Boston Police were in the right place at the right time to stop a 45-year-old Charlotte, N.C. man from stealing a wallet from a customer at a local business on Friday.

According to investigating South Boston Cpl. M.W. Bowen, a customer put down his wallet while making a purchase and the suspect, Michael Dale Murdock, reached out and grabbed the wallet — which contained over $200 in cash — and ran off.

Bowen said he was patrolling the area when the incident took place and was able to stop the suspect. Bowen took back the wallet, with the cash still inside, and returned to the customer.

Murdock is being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax on a charge of felony grand larceny. No bond has yet been set for his release.

In other reports from the South Boston Police Department, Officer J. J. George charged 48 year old Brian Dale Phillips of Halifax with shoplifting on Saturday. Phillips was released on a summons.

Also, Sgt. S. L. Warf charged 59 year old Thomas Kirby of South Boston on Thursday, with driving on a suspended license. He was also released on a summons.
