One year after being tapped to serve as principal at Park View High School, Michelle Powell is leaving to become the principal at La Crosse Elementary School. Powell will replace Connie Puckett, who will return to the classroom beginning with the 2013/14 school year.

Powell shared the news with her staff late last month.

Powell began her teaching career after she and husband Vince returned to Mecklenburg County in 1985. Previously she worked in the accounting department at Duke Hospital.

She began taking classes to receive her teacher endorsement while working full time. Powell earned a B.S. in business management from Virginia Tech.

Eventually, Powell earned a Master in Supervision and Administration from Longwood College. She spent 13 years teaching in Brunswick County before coming to Mecklenburg County, serving stints at Park View Middle School, Buckhorn Elementary and as assistant principal at Park View High School.

At this time, her replacement has not been named. She becomes the second of Mecklenburg’s high school principals to depart at the end of the year. Bluestone principal Kristy Somerville is taking a position in the Central Office.
