Dan Powell, former Bluestone High School athletics director, was named assistant principal at Bluestone during a special called meeting of the Mecklenburg County School Board Monday night in Boydton.

Powell has been employed by Mecklenburg County Public Schools since 2003. Most recently he worked as alternative education teacher for the division, a post he held for the past two years. He began his career with MCPS in 2003, serving as a health and physical education teacher and coach at Bluestone middle and high school.

Between 2003 and 2016, Powell coached Bluestone varsity baseball, junior varsity basketball and cross-country, and middle school golf and basketball.

From 2012 to 2016, while also teaching, Powell took on the job as athletics director for Bluestone Middle School.

In 2016 he was named athletics director at Bluestone High School. He held that post for three years, until 2019 when he became an alternative education teacher.

Powell earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health and Physical Education/Fitness from the University of Lynchburg in 2003. He later earned a Master’s of Science degree in Sports Management with a concentration in Athletic Administration from American Military University in 2013. Recently, he received a graduate certificate in school leadership from Liberty University.

Powell steps into the post previously held by Velva Kindley. She was named principal of Bluestone High School earlier this year following the appointment of Magie Lenhart Wilkerson to lead Mecklenburg’s consolidated high school when it opens for the 2022-23 school year. Wilkerson previously held the job of Bluestone principal.
