Resolution pays tribute to late Alex Williamson

Halifax County and South Boston and Halifax town officials on Monday night presented Betty Williamson and her son John with a plaque recognizing the many contributions of her husband, Alex Williamson, who died in a bizarre accident last month. The plaque was presented by Board Chairman William I. Fitzgerald, South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston and Halifax Vice Mayor Dick Moore. See story, page 5. / April 22, 2010
Halifax County supervisors, along with town council members of South Boston, Halifax, Scottsburg and Virgilina, honored the late Alex Williamson by presenting his wife Betty and son John with a framed resolution citing his many contributions to the community.

Also presenting a resolution of appreciation were members of several of county volunteer fire departments, along with Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders. The resolution presented by members of the governing bodies on Monday, read as follows:

Resolution of Commendation Honoring the Memory of

William Alexander (Alex) Williamson

WHEREAS, Mr. William Alexander (Alex) Williamson was a lifetime resident of Halifax County; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson served his country with honor during the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1972 as a member of the United States Air Force; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson’s exemplary career with the Virginia Department of Forestry as a forestry technician and firefighter spanned nearly 36 years from 1974 until his death on March 13, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson served as a member of the America Legion Post #8, the VFW Post #8243, the Department of Forestry Honor Guard, and the Farm Bureau Board of Directors; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson was a lifetime member of the Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department, an honorary member of the South Boston Fire Department, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williamson was a faithful member of the Calvary United Methodist Church providing outreach assistance to those in need as well as providing life altering assistance to a number of individuals as an organ donor; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Halifax County Board of Supervisors, the South Boston Town Council, the Halifax Town Council, the Scottsburg Town Council, and the Virgilina Town Council hereby extend to the family of Mr. William Alexander Williamson their condolences and appreciation for his dedication and faithful service to the citizens of Halifax County.
