Saturday crash claims 23-year-old / November 11, 2019

A Halifax man died Saturday in a single-vehicle crash on MacDonald Road in Scottsburg after his sedan ran off the road, overcorrected and struck several trees.

Al’terique Jemal Gomes, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 9 a.m. wreck. Gomes was not wearing his seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, a 2002 Chrysler Sebring.

A resident of Lower Liberty Road, Gomes was the sole occupant and driver of the vehicle. According to Virginia State Police, the sedan was traveling westbound at 1169 MacDonald Road when it ran off the right side, overcorrected and crashed into trees on the left side of the roadway. State Trooper D.T. Spencer investigated.

The death brings the number of highway fatalities in Halifax County this year to nine.
