School complex recognized for design excellence

SoVaNow.com / December 30, 2020
Ballou Justice Upton Architects announced that the Mecklenburg County middle-high school complex — the firm’s design that currently is under construction in Baskerville — has been selected for publication in the American School & University 2020 Architectural Portfolio, an annual competition honoring education design excellence.

The Architectural Portfolio spotlights projects representing today’s most effective learning environments.

A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country.

Ninety-eight projects were chosen for publication in AS&U, an educational facilities, purchasing and business administration magazine geared toward facility planners, school and university administrators, and architects.

This is the competition’s 38th year.

Awarded projects exhibited clarity of concept, innovation and creativity in response to the specifics of program, users, community and site. Specifically, high-achieving designs demonstrated:

» Sustainable design

» Healthful interior and exterior environments

» Adaptability/versatility over time

» Engagement with the surrounding community, where applicable

» High-quality construction and materials

» Budget-conscious implementation

» Unobtrusive safety measures

» A sense of place/location/region

» Prioritization of well being and security

» Student engagement, and

» Appropriate scale

The project is featured in the November/December 2020 edition of the magazine and also online at http://www.SchoolDesigns.com. More information about the Architectural Portfolio, including a complete list of 2020 projects selected for publication, is available on American School & University’s http://www.SchoolDesigns.com Web site, or by contacting Molly Roudebush, senior marketing manager, at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
