UPDATE: The Halifax County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday night shortly after 9 p.m. that an 11-year-old child in the Alton area has been found safe and sound.

The child, an African American boy, had gone missing from a residence on Henderson Road early Thursday morning.

The initial report on the child's disappearance is below:

Virginia and North Carolina authorities are actively searching for an 11-year-old African American male who has gone missing from a residence in the Virgilina area Thursday morning.

The youth was wearing gray sweatpants and a black t-shirt and a white bandanna, according to Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark.

He left a residence on Henderson Road near the North Carolina-Virginia border early this morning, touching off the search for his whereabouts. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone with information on the subject or who has come into contact with him call the department at 434-476-3334.
