Services Expo to put residents in touch with help / February 26, 2018

“Stop getting by. Get ahead!”

More than 20 community-based service providers in Halifax County will come together Friday at the Prizery for the first SoBo Services Expo.

Organized by Halifax County Department of Social Services, this event is free and open to all residents of Halifax County and South Boston.

According to event coordinator, Delilah White, anyone who has a need for low or no-cost services is encouraged to attend. “We want this to be a resource for those whose life situation makes it difficult or impossible to access services, whether it be legal, health insurance, nutrition, mental health, or workforce training.”

White explained that many people fall into a services gap, sometimes referred to as the “working challenged.” For example: those working two or more part-time jobs and do not qualify for employer-paid benefits; very large families with financial resources stretched thin; retirees not yet eligible for Medicare; or those who make too much to qualify for subsidies, but not enough to pay out of pocket for needed services.

“We needed an event like this to bring critical community services under one roof at the same time, and I’m excited about the participation we have.”

Expo participants include: Halifax Social Services, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, Southside Virginia Community College, Perfect Timing, LLC, Faces of Virginia, SEAS Coalition, Strategic Therapy Associates, Southside Community Services, New Hope Support Services, Healthy Families, Tri-County Community Action, Halifax County Community Federal Credit Union, Victorious Ambition, Virginia Tech/Virginia Cooperative Extension, Halifax County Health Department, PATHS Healthcare South Boston, Halifax County Cancer Association, Blink Health, Virginia Legal Aid Society – Halifax County, Dan River AmeriCorps, and Virginia Skyline Girl Scouts.

Attendees will be able to check eligibility and sign up for programs at the event.

Light refreshments will be available, door prizes awarded every half hour, and DJ Slick (Kelvin Ferrell) will provide “mood” music.

The hours are 9 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Prizery.

Gold event sponsors are: Halifax County Department of Social Services, Southside Virginia Community College, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Virginia Department of Social Services.

Silver event sponsors are: Southside Community Services and Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.
