South Boston Council meets tonight at 7 / September 09, 2019

South Boston Town Council will meet tonight, at 7 p.m. in Council chambers on Yancey Street to tackle a light agenda that includes a discussion of the Tobacco Heritage Trail.

Halifax County is seeking $200,000 in grant funding for a trail extension beyond Mirey Creek, where an already-approved 1.6 mile trail expansion is in the works. The second phase of the trail expansion will go about a half-mile past Mirey Creek, necessitating the construction of a footbridge over the tributary.

South Boston provides maintenance of the trail, and Council is being asked to approve a resolution in support of the trail project. The grant application for $200,000 has been submitted to the Virginia Tobacco Commission.

In other agenda items with tonight’s meeting, Council will hold a public hearing on an alley abandonment to pave the way for construction of the new SOVA Innovation Hub by Mid-Atlantic Broadband (MBC) and Microsoft, and members will be asked to approve a resolution for Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23.

The meeting includes a citizen comment period and is open to the public.
