South Boston expected to name Clarke’s successor tonight

SoVaNow.com / February 12, 2018

South Boston Town Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. with a decision expected on filling a vacancy created by the death of Councilman Billy Clarke.

Council members are expected to announce their appointment of an interim council representative to succeed Clarke, who died Jan. 10 at age 67.

Three citizens have expressed interest in serving on Council, and Council members are expected to interview the three candidates at 5:30 p.m. prior to the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

The person chosen by Council to fill the vacancy will serve only until a special election is held during the May municipal election, at which time citizens will elect a candidate to serve the remainder of Clarke’s term.

During the regular meeting, Council members will discuss plans for the purchase of properties in Riverdale fronting US 501 including the former Ray’s Key Shop building and a parcel of land across the highway that would be used for a proposed boat ramp.

Members will also consider the expiration of the term of Bill McCaleb to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Council will also present a resolution memorializing former Councilman Billy Clarke’s service to the town.
