South Boston set to vote on 10¢ cigarette tax / August 13, 2018
South Boston Town Council meets today with a decision on a proposed 10 cent-per-pack cigarette tax on the agenda.

Council is set to vote on cigarette tax after months of discussion, which has included opposition from some town retailers of tobacco products and members of the local farming community. Town Council is considering the tax to raise revenue to give employees making under $40,000 annually a raise.

The meeting will take place in Council Chambers on Yancey Street starting at 7 p.m.

In other agenda items,

» Members will get an update on the South Boston Rotary Club’s service grant which will be used to assist the downtown tree improvement project.

» A public hearing will be conducted on Willie T. Brandon’s application to operate a taxi service.

» Council will be asked to appoint one of their own members to the Southside Planning District Commission of Board of Directors.
