South Hill police force accredited by state

SoVaNow.com / July 07, 2021

The South Hill Police Department has received its first accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, which recently voted to accept the recommendation of its assessment team to grant the designation to the town department.

The assessment team reviewed close to 200 proofs, conducted reviews of equipment, conducted ride-a-longs with SHPD officers, and reviewed officers’ knowledge of policy and best practices for the law enforcement profession.

The Commission’s goals include the following: To increase the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth through the delivery of services; to promote cooperation among all components in the criminal justice system; to ensure the appropriate level of training for law enforcement personnel; to promote public confidence in law enforcement, and to promote the professionalism of law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

South Hill Police Chief Stuart Bowen expressed his appreciation to Capt. Shane Johnson, who has spearheaded the department’s efforts over the past few years to become accredited. Bowen congratulated the staff of the SHPD for their hard work to help make accreditation happen.
