State Police probe two deaths on US 58 (UPDATED)

South Boston News
Traffic on U.S. 58 near Turbeville was partially blocked as police investigators assessed the scene
SoVaNow.com / February 08, 2020
Two persons were found dead Saturday in the median strip of U.S. 58 near Turbeville in what looked at first to be an early morning traffic accident.

Virginia State Police responded to the scene around 2:51 a.m. Saturday and found a Nissan Maxima that appeared to have plowed into a gully separating the east and west bound lanes of the four-lane highway. Troopers found two bodies on the ground — an adult male and adult female.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents with the Virginia State Police Appomattox Field Office were called in to lead a suspicious death investigation, according to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller.

Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Geller said Sunday. Further information on the case is expected to be released Monday.

The incident took place about 10 miles outside of the Town of South Boston, a short distance west of the Turbeville fire station on U.S. 58.

Investigators remained on the scene gathering evidence through early Saturday afternoon. Traffic on the highway was restricted to east and west single lanes while police and rescue vehicles remained stationed there.

The bodies of the deceased, both covered in white sheets, could be seen by motorists driving by.

The remains of the adult male and female are being transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the Virginia State Police at 434-352-7128 or #77 on a cell phone or to email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
