Staunton River State Park adds fitness trail / April 25, 2019
Sometimes exercising at home or at a gym can feel confining. If you feel you need a breath of fresh air from your workout routine, come on over to Staunton River State Park to revitalize your exercise regimen.

To add to the variety of recreational activities provided at Staunton River State Park, a new feature has been unveiled to keep bodies moving, hearts pumping and people happy.

The fitness trail construction started during the summer of 2018 with the help of the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crew stationed at the park, Park ranger Interns and park staff. Everyone involved helped to plan, design and build the fitness stations on the trail.

The trail is 0.25 miles long paralleling the Captain Staunton Trail and has 10 fitness stations. Park staff completed the fitness trail this winter by adding an additional station and a stone path to make the trail more user friendly.

Of course, to blend with the natural surroundings, each station is constructed (almost) completely from wood. Sometimes the look and feel of things can help get you to a certain mindset — which in this case is exercising in nature.

Each activity gets you moving in different ways and targeting various muscles in your legs, back and arms to keep the workout fresh and interesting. A short jog from one station to the next keeps your heart rate up and boosts your cardio workout.

Choose the stations that work best for your level of fitness needs

And for those who are more casual with their exercise routines, don’t worry. The fitness trail is designed to be utilized by all levels of athleticism. You can approach each activity at your own pace and there’s no right or wrong way to interact with each station.

Approach the fitness at your own pace, do what’s best for you and have fun

The fitness trail is open during normal park hours from dawn to dusk and parking fees do apply. YCC members and Interns are slated to enhance current features of the trail and construct new activity stations during the year. Staunton River State Park hopes to see you on the trail.
