Suspect held on drug, habitual offender counts / May 10, 2018
A Scottsburg man has been charged with driving as a habitual offender and drug possession, both felonies, after police seized a substance believed to be heroin from his vehicle last week.

Members of the Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotic and Gang Force initiated a May 2 traffic stop on the 2002 BMV operated by Joe Belt Allred Jr.

Belt was driving on Route 360 about a quarter mile north of Terry’s Bridge Road when police spotted a defective third brake light on his car. During the traffic stop, Belt was identified as an habitual offender, with six previous charges for driving on a suspended license.

A search of Allred’s car led to the seizure of some $1,200 of a substance that police suspect is heroin.

Allred was transported to the Halifax Adult Detention Center and charged with being a habitual offender and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance.

Allred is currently being held in the Halifax Adult Detention Center with no bond.
