Four suspects between ages 19 and 23 have been charged with murder in the slaying of Nicholas “Nick” Conner of South Boston, who was found shot to death outside of Henderson, N.C. on Dec. 18.

Conner, a 2014 graduate of Halifax County High School and 2018 graduate of Longwood University, was found dead in a crashed vehicle on Mansfield Lane, near Henderson. Medics and firefighters at the scene discovered that Conner had suffered several bullet wounds. The 24-year-old was later pronounced dead at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

The arrests of the four suspects were announced Friday evening by Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame. They are:

» Damarous Magbie, 23, of 755 Dr. Finch Road, Henderson. Magbie has been charged with murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle.

» Demetris Miller, 23, of 131 Sherwood Road, Henderson. Miller is charged with murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

» Latimor Drumgold, 23, of 1218 Railroad St., Henderson. Drumgold is charged with murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

» Neajsia Jones, 19, of 128 Hidden Creek Lane, Warrenton. She faces counts of murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

All four suspects are being held without bond, with court dates pending Feb. 17.

Authorities have not offered any explanation on what may have motivated the homicide, nor how it transpired. Only one suspect, Magbie, is charged with shooting at a moving vehicle.

Conner’s vehicle was found off the road on Mansfield Lane, in what initially seemed to be an auto accident. Conner’s family has said he went to Henderson to purchase a cellphone on the day he was slain.

“Evidently, he was shot in the vehicle and the vehicle went into the edge of a woodline,” Brame said in December, adding that investigators thought the shooting took place at the intersection of Mansfield Lane and Stagecoach Road.

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office has been assisted by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation in probing the homicide.

Conner was the son of Michael and Jellpa Conner of South Boston and is survived by a brother, Dale Edward Conner of Scottsburg, grandparents, aunts and uncles and other family member. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where the funeral and burial were held on Dec. 28.
