The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating store thefts in Virgilina and Liberty, with the latter crime committed by an armed robber with a long gun and wearing a Halloween mask.

Liberty Mini Mart was robbed Tuesday night shortly before 9 p.m. by a masked subject who came into the store and demanded money from the cashier. The assailant was about 6 feet tall and appeared to be heavyset. The suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash from the store, located on L.P. Bailey Highway.

In-store surveillance video captured images of the suspect holding what appears to be a shotgun.

Sheriff’s deputies, Virginia State Police and Halifax Town Police responded to the scene, and the search is ongoing for the assailant. Anyone with any information about the robbery or suspicious activity in the area is urged to call Investigator Jeff Burton at (434) 476-3339 or the Halifax County Crime Line at (434) 476-8445.

On Saturday, shortly after midnight, a second theft occurred at Country Corner Store in Virgilina. A hooded suspect entered the store after closing time and made off with an undisclosed haul of goods.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone with any information about the Virgilina break-in, or may have seen any suspicious activity, to please call Deputy Chris Hudson at (434) 476-3339 or the Crime Line at (434) 476-8445.
