SVHEC to hold Business of Art & Design open house Tuesday / August 04, 2010
Have you heard about the Business of Art & Design but still have questions? If so, don’t miss the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s (SVHEC) upcoming information session. On Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 5:30 p.m., Business of Art & Design faculty, staff, and coordinators will be available to answer questions about the overall program as well as individual courses.

A number of Business of Art & Design courses are available this fall. Intro to Multimedia, Intro to Computer Graphics, Creative Thinking, Small Business Management, and Product Design & Development I will all be offered. Each of these classes provides an opportunity to gain new skills that will make you an asset in your current place of employment or the one to come.

With Intro to Multimedia, students learn the basics of working with audio, video, photography, and the web. Business of Art & Design Coordinator Ben Capozzi describes the class as “digital literacy for adults.” Intro to Computer Graphics gives students an opportunity to work with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign to create images for print, video, and the web. Students will also format images for print and e-publishing.

The Creative Thinking class has become a student favorite with its interactive format and engaging instructor. The class encourages problem solving and critical thinking, two of skills most valued by employers today. Students are challenged to think in different ways and in the process learn that the fun is in the journey--not just the solution. “It’s the greatest class ever,” said William Cherry who took the course this past spring. “I’m hoping to take the class again even if I don’t need it. It’s money well spent.”

Small Business Management is the perfect class for anyone who has ever thought of starting a business or wondered what steps to take to make a business successful. This course will teach you how to take your idea from your mind to the marketplace.

Introduction to Product Design & Development will give students an opportunity to join a program that has experienced local, regional, and national success with projects like “The Chair,” and the Martinsville Speedway Grandfather Trophy Clock. Students will build a series of small projects leading to a final, cumulative project as they combine advanced manufacturing, engineering, and design. Scholarships are now available for students enrolling in the Product Design & Development program. Individuals attending the Open House will have an opportunity to learn how to take advantage of this new financial assistance award.
