Task Force arrests two in probes of heroin, cocaine trafficking / February 04, 2019

The Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotic and Gang Task Force has arrested two men in connection with suspected trafficking of heroin and cocaine in Halifax County in the past week.

On Thursday, Task Force members initiated a traffic stop in Westside Trailer Court, pulling over 25-year-old Deaundray Martin of Riverdale Drive, South Boston. Martin had been under surveillance of Task Force members on suspicion of distribution of heroin. Martin was recognized operating a Ford SUV in the Sinai area, with Task Force members aware that Martin operator’s license had been suspended in the Commonwealth.

Searching the vehicle, officers sized approximately 50 bags of suspected heroin valued at $1,000. A stolen firearm was also recovered from Martin during the incident.

Martin was taken into custody and transported to Halifax Adult Detention Center where he was charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance. He was also charged with possession of marijuana. Martin is being held at the Halifax jail on no bond.

Additional charges are forthcoming as this remains an active investigation, according to the Task Force.

On Wednesday, Task Force members executed a search warrant at the residence of 7217 Huell Matthews Highway, Alton, and arrested Abenes Maurice Yancey, 48, on two charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition after being convicted of a felony.

Yancey’s residence has been subject of an ongoing investigation into suspected distribution of cocaine. A firearm and materials associated with the distribution of cocaine were seized during the search. He was arrested without incident.

Yancey is being held at the Halifax Adult Detention Center on no bond. Additional charges are forthcoming, according to police.

The Task Force is comprised of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, South Boston Police Department, and Virginia State Police.
