Taste & Tour Saturday at Halifax Farmers Market

SoVaNow.com / June 19, 2017

The Town of Halifax Farmers Market will celebrate the 2017 season by hosting a “Taste & Tour of the Market” on Saturday, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

The morning events will kick off with hourly giveaways beginning at 9 a.m. There is a great selection of prizes to be given away that have been donated by local market vendors and local businesses.

At 10 a.m. Hudson Heritage Farms will host a grilling demo featuring a crisp potato hash with sausage and onions. The grilling demo will feature local products that have been raised by and are being donated by local farmers.

The Market’s seed library with free gardening books will be open to the public. Have fun this summer growing a vegetable, flower, or herbs and possibly discover if you have a green thumb. Anyone can freely choose any seed packets and plant it according to the directions. You can exchange your unwanted seeds for something you may want to try growing. “Every seed has a story and you can grow that next chapter.”

Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail will have an informational display along with some locally crafted barn quilts on display. If you are interested in joining the Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail you can pick up an application at the market. You can also join the Facebook page or check out the website at gohalfaxva.com/barnquilts for more information.

Local Virginia Cooperative Extension Family Nutrition Program assistant Maria Traynham will be hosting a cooking demo at 11 a.m. Maria will be grilling some of the different vegetables that are available that day. For more information on the Family Nutrition Program and for different recipes you can visit their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/halifaxvafnp.

The indoor market will be open with over 20 local artisans and crafters, where you are sure to find something for every occasion. You will also find many different treats/samples at many of the inside vendor booths.

The markets recipe basket with over 50 recipes will be ready for all to enjoy. Free kids coloring sheets and activity books (while supplies last). Fresh samples throughout the morning, both with the inside vendors as well as the outside vendors.

All SNAP/EBT purchases will be matched up to $10. The SNAP/EBT benefits may be used to purchase meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, honey, herbs, jams/preserves, and food producing plants/seeds. All SNAP clients that shop at the market on the 24th will receive a free water bottle and reusable shopping bag while supplies last. This matching program is made possible through a grant provided by the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.

The Halifax Farmers Market is open every Saturday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information about the market or the market events you can visit the Facebook page at townofhalifaxfarmersmarket or call 434-476-2343.
