Tax bills mailed out
SoVaNow.com / October 01, 2012Halifax County 2012 personal property tax bills were mailed out last week. The bills provide car tax relief for personal vehicles valued up to $20,000. Gross weight of these qualified vehicles must be less than 7,501 pounds. The tax bill shows the net amount of the vehicle tax, plus any decal fee charged.
County decal information is taken from either a personal property tax listing or from the DMV files. Any questions concerning the values or qualifications of vehicles assessed, please call 434-476-3314.
Personal property values are assessed by ownership or title as of January 1, 2012. Please review your bill carefully to insure that all vehicles and decal fees are properly assessed in the titled names.
Also this year, a $48 solid waste disposal fee is being assessed by Halifax County. The tax applies to each household, as reflected on personal property tax bills. (Households with more than one taxable vehicle or item of personal property are assessed only once for the solid waste fee.) Please call 476-3314 if you have any questions concerning this fee.
Please detach all bill coupons and mail or bring coupons to insure all payments are made properly.
The deadline for payment of local taxes, which will include the second installment of real estate tax is Wednesday, December 5, 2012. No additional bill on 2012 real estate will be mailed. A postmark date of December 5 will be accepted. A 10 percent penalty will be added to all unpaid tax amounts as of December 6, and a 10 percent per annum will be added for interest due.
Taxpayers are asked to call 434-476-3318 if they did not receive a personal property bill, especially those that have moved to a new address since January 1, 2012. New landowners that have acquired land since January 1, 2012 need to call if they did not receive an earlier bill.
Local ordinance requires that the tax relief exemption for qualified elderly and disabled persons be applied only if taxes are paid up to date as of the current deadline on real estate and mobile homes. If you think you may qualify for this exemption for the coming tax year of 2013, please call 434-476-3314 for an application for next year. No exemption is given on vehicles.
Taxpayers have the option of paying their County taxes by mail or over the counter using check, cash, or a major credit/debit card. You can also visit http://www.WebFeePay.com. Please use a year, ticket number, category of tax, either real estate or personal property and all credit/debit card information. A nominal fee is charged by WebFeePay if a card is used.
