The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center announced yesterday the selection of veteran accounting manager Brenda Terry as the new Chief Finance and Operations Officer (CFOO), effective Wednesday.

Terry was selected to replace outgoing CFOO Patty Nelson. In November, Nelson announced plans to leave the SVHEC because of family relocation commitments.

Terry has been an integral part of the SVHEC’s finance and administration team for 10 years. In her role as accounting manager, she has held primary responsibility for the agency’s day-to-day operations of accounts receivable and payable, managed fixed assets, and prepared diverse and complex financial, budget and grant reports. She has helped manage a complex budget encompassing multiple funding sources and multi-year grants.

Terry has held senior level accounting positions in the manufacturing, healthcare, and finance sectors. Her varied experiences and her intimate knowledge of the SVHEC, its strategic direction, and key initiatives, made her uniquely qualified to serve as the new CFOO.

“This job posting drew some of the most qualified candidates we have ever attracted to the SVHEC. Competition was fierce. But Brenda impressed the search committee at each and every stage of the interview process. Her experience, understanding of the agency, and passion for education put her at and over the top. I am confident in and look forward to the great work that lies ahead of us under Brenda’s leadership as SVHEC chief finance and aperations officer,” said Betty H. Adams, SVHEC executive director.

Terry steps into the CFOO position at a pivotal time as the SVHEC continues to grow its workforce training programs, launches the new Career Tech Academy, and works with regional stakeholders to advance the Southern Virginia Transportation Project.

“I appreciate the support and encouragement received from the SVHEC staff. This is a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to continuing to work towards advancing the SVHEC’s program initiatives,” Terry said.

Terry holds a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Averett University and a Master’s degree in accounting from Strayer University.
