Truck driver killed in I-85 crash / July 28, 2021
A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 in Brunswick County on Wednesday left one person dead and two injured.

A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police said the July 21 crash occurred around 1:43 a.m. on I-85 near mile marker 24 in Brunswick County.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a 2020 Freightliner tractor trailer ran off the roadway, side-swiping a 2008 Acura driven by Kaven E. Kamger-Dayhoff of Maryland.

The Freightliner continued off the roadway into the tree line, striking several trees before jack-knifing. The driver of the rig, 31-year-old Eric Salas of Snow Camp, N.C., died at the scene from his injuries.

Virginia State Police blocked all lanes of traffic on I-85 near the site of the crash for nearly 11 hours as Troopers continued their investigation.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation were brought in to divert traffic around the scene.

Kamger-Dayhoff and his passenger, Kevin Figueroa, also of Maryland, suffered minor injuries.

State Police did not say if charges were being considered, only that “speed nor alcohol were contributing factors.”

All lanes on I-85 were reopened by 12:41 p.m.
