It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Halifax County, as South Boston and Halifax are brimming with fun-filled seasonal events and holiday cheer. The best way to share in the holiday spirit is to participate in the County’s festive happenings.

Tree lightings, a “far-out” parade, visits with Santa, dazzling theater performances and fantastic holiday shopping downtown in South Boston and Halifax await you in November in December. Embrace the spirit of the season, take a stroll with friends downtown, stop for hot cider, and admire the decorations up and down the street.

To help you decide which of the many magical events to enjoy, we offer you a guide to many of the events that await you in South Boston and Halifax.

Take pictures while shopping at your favorite local businesses of either you (and your friends) having fun shopping or of your amazing finds and tag #shopsmall, #shopsmallsobo, #shopsmallhali, #discoverhfx to be entered into the photo contest. The Chamber will enter all who participate in a drawing, and give away a $25 Chamber Check on Monday, November 27th.

Halifax Farmer’s Market

Christmas Open House, Sunday, Nov. 26, Town of Halifax, 1–5 p.m.

Come out and enjoy antique cars on Main Street and visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus at The Cozy Cottage. Children may hand deliver their letters to Santa Claus at the Cozy Cottage while enjoying hot apple cider.

Children ages 12 and under will be able to come to shop for their family and friends at the “Children’s Gift Giving Bazaar” in Kid’s Town. Items will be priced 50 cents to $2.

HCCA Luminary Service, Sunday, Nov. 26, Halifax Courthouse Steps Time: 5:30- 6:30 p.m.


Halifax County Cancer Association will host a luminary service to remember and honor cancer patients on the court house steps in Halifax.

Luminary bags are available at no cost for you to decorate in a way that represents your loved one. The bags will be lit, names will be read to memorialize or honor family or friends, then the names will be published in the newspaper.

#Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. #Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. #Giving Tuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year.

“A New England Christmas,” Tuesday, Nov. 28, The South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History, 2-4 p.m.

Admission: $4/Adults $2/Children

Join the museum for the tastes, sounds, and sights of “A New England Christmas.” Activities will be available for the kids as well as pictures with Santa and refreshments for all. Join us as we celebrate our 5th Annual Christmas Open House.

Classics on a Shelf Early Literacy Fundraiser Auction

Friday, Dec. 1

South Boston Library

6– 7:30 p.m.

Tickets: $20 each or two for $30

This year’s theme is Classics on a Shelf and will feature 12 custom designed shelves repurposed from barn wood by local woodworker Clint Johnson. Each shelf will hold an 11 x 14 painting representing a classic children’s book painted by 12 local artists. The shelves also will come with the book represented in the painting and a flashlight in the drawer for late night reading. The shelves will be on display during the event and will available to bid on during the auction. Winners will be announced at the close of the evening’s event.

Wine, hard cider, heavy hors d’oeuvres with catering provided by Windmill Bakery will be provided. Door prizes will be given away as well.

All proceeds will be used to upgrade the technology in the children’s departments of the Halifax County South Boston Public Library.

Breakfast with Santa

Join Santa for breakfast at Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center.

Santa will make his appearance at 10:00 a.m.

Build-A-Basket Holiday Event

Join us at Hunting Creek Vineyards over two weekends where you can try our wines and socialize with friends and family. While browsing several different wine loving gift ideas for the holidays, enjoy live music and chef prepared food pairings. Before leaving, you can build a basket to share with a loved one. This will be held December 2nd, 3rd, 9th and 10th from 11am - 5pm.

Christmas Open House

Sunday, Dec. 3, Patrick Henry Red Hill, Brookneal. 2-4 p.m.


The Patrick Henry Auxiliary sponsors this event and cordially invites the public to attend; admission is complimentary, but donations would be appreciated.

Guests will be treated to docent-guided tours of the historic buildings at Red Hill, including Patrick Henry’s house, Law Office, and other buildings, all decorated for the holiday by the Red Hill Garden Club. Complimentary hot mulled cider, Brunswick stew prepared by the Charlotte Lions Club, and homemade cookies will be available throughout the afternoon. The gift shop will be offering a 10% discount on its regular shop merchandise on this special day. The Museum Shop has many items that are perfect for gift-giving, including locally made items by our volunteers.

The annual sale of boxwood wreaths and boxwood kissing balls, with proceeds benefiting the Patrick Henry Auxiliary, has begun. Reserved wreaths and kissing balls will be available around the end of November and at the Christmas Open House as supplies last. These wreaths cost only $30 each and kissing balls $10 each. Both are handmade using locally grown boxwood. Call 434-376-2044 to reserve your wreath or kissing ball today as only a limited supply is available.

This moon is known as the Full Cold Moon because December is the time of year when the cold winter air settles in and the nights become long and dark.

Meet at the Visitor Center and the best spot to view the rise of the only Supermoon in 2017 will be determined.
