Two armed robberies, one suspect arrested / June 12, 2017

One suspect was arrested and another is still at large following two armed robberies this week at South Boston Jiffy Stores — at John Randolph Boulevard (US 360) and at Wilborn Avenue.

On Thursday, South Boston Police responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Jiffy Store located at 910 John Randolph Blvd. According to witnesses, a black male described as about 5’5” tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds entered the store and displayed a small handgun and demanded money. The suspect then fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash and headed in the direction of Ash Avenue.

Town officers and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies, with the aid of a Sheriff’s K-9 unit, searched the area but were unable to locate the culprit.

The suspect’s face was mostly covered with a dark colored hoodie. Anyone having any information regarding this crime is asked to contact South Boston Police Detective Randy Redd at 434-575-7273 or 434-575-4271, or call the Halifax County Crime Line at 434-476-8445. Anyone providing information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case may be eligible for a cash reward.

Police were able to arrest a suspect in a second Jiffy Store robbery on Wednesday night less than an hour after the incident was reported.

Stephen Leon Logan, 28, of Vernon Hill was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery for the Wilborn Avenue holdup. He was taken to the Halifax Adult Detention Center, where he remains incarcerated without bond.

South Boston Police officers, along with members of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, were called out Wednesday, June 7 just before 10 p.m. to investigate the reported robbery. Two store clerks told officers that a man pointed an object at them and demanded money from the cash register. He then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Joining the hunt for the suspect were Town officers, Sheriff’s deputies and a Sheriff’s K-9 unit. Logan was soon tracked down at the nearby Willow Oaks Apartment Complex.

In addition to the two counts of armed robbery, Logan also was presented with two outstanding capiases — for failure to appear in court and a probation violation.

More charges may be pending in the case. The counts against Logan were presented by Officer T. Clay of the South Boston Police Department.
