A single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning resulted in serious injuries to two local men, both of whom were airlifted to Duke University Medical Center for treatment,

According to a report by investigating Virginia State Police Officer J. A. Wilmoth, Andrew Humphries Jr., 27, of South Boston was operating a 1999 Buick headed south on US Route 501 near Cluster Springs when the vehicle crossed the median strip and entered the northbound lane of the four-lane highway. The Buck then made an abrupt turn back into the median strip and flipped over four times before landing back in the south bound lane.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m., according to police reports.

Humphries and a front seat passenger, 19-year-old Christopher Brice Burton, were both airlifted from the scene for treatment of life-threatening injuries. According to Wilmoth, neither of the men was conscious after the crash.

Another passenger in the back seat, 19-year-old Trevor Perkins, was able to walk away from the crash with only minor injuries. Wilmoth says he does not think any of the men were wearing a seat belt.

In describing how the crash occurred, Wilmoth said he has not been able to determine why Humphries made the abrupt turn back across the median strip, except that possibly he saw another vehicle coming — although there were no signs that other cars were close by.

The MedFlight transport landed on the northern lane of US 501, which caused traffic to be detoured from both north and south bound lanes for approximately two hours.
