Two injured after vehicle rear-ended on Wilborn Avenue / August 10, 2020
Two elderly residents were transported for hospital treatment after being injured Wednesday night in a two-vehicle crash on Wilborn Avenue in South Boston, some 200 feet north of Logan Street.

Virginia Lowery, 84, and Hugh Irby, 85 suffered serious but unspecified injuries in the crash, which police say was caused by a car speeding through the middle turning lane of Wilborn Avenue. The fast-moving 2018 Hyundai Sante Fe struck a 2010 Honda CR-V carrying Lowery and Irby from behind. Lowery was driving the Honda, which sustained $8,000 in damages.

The Hyundai Sante Fe was driven by Valerie Carden, 33, of South Boston. Charges against her are pending, according to police reports.

The Hyundai sustained estimated damages of $10,000.

The crash, which took place at 6:53 p.m., happened as both vehicles were traveling south on Wilborn. According to police, Carden was driving at a high rate of speed in the middle turning lane when her Hyundai struck Lowery’s Honda from behind.

The impact caused the Honda to come to a rest at the intersection of Wilborn and Logan. Carden’s Hyundai was knocked into the northbound lane of Wilborn Avenue.

Officer J.G. Long is investigating the crash.
