Virginia State Police have released the name of the passenger who died at the scene of the fatal crash.

Charlie J. Phillips, Jr., 17, of Virgilina was killed in a single vehicle crash Tuesday, at 5:56 p.m. on Buckshoal Road about one mile east of U.S. 58.

He was a passenger in the 2006 Toyota Matrix, which was driven by another 17-year-old male from Virgilina.

The driver was injured and transported from the crash scene.

According to a report filed by investigating Virginia State Police D.L. Hughes, the vehicle was westbound, headed toward U.S. 58, when it veered off to the right. The driver then over corrected and ran off to the left, striking a tree.
