Voter registration deadline extended through today

SoVaNow.com / October 15, 2020

A federal court has extended the deadline for citizens to register to vote in the Nov. 3 General Election after an internet service interruption shut down the state’s online registration portal on Tuesday, the previous deadline.

People who want to register to vote have through today to complete the process. You can visit the Voter Registrar’s Office at the Bethune Complex in Halifax through 5 p.m. to register in person, or do so online through 11:59 p.m.

On Tuesday, a Chesterfield County construction accident cut a fiber cable that feeds data to the Virginia Department of Elections, which operates the online voter registration system.

“What we have here is a case where somebody forgot to call Miss Utility in Chesterfield County,” said U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney Jr. during a hearing in which he ordered the two-day extension.

To find out more about the process of registering to vote, contact the Halifax County Voter Registrar’s Office at (434) 476-3322 or visit online at http://www.elections.virginia.gov/registration/how-to-register.
