Garryin Yancey, winner of the 2018 Principal’s Award at Halifax County High School, received the honor for his willingness to help others in and around the school, and for his character and positive attitude, according to Principal Michael Lewis.

Lewis told First Sergeant (retired) Gregory T. Scott, JROTC program leader, that he always sees Yancey picking up trash that does not belong to him and holding doors open for others. Lewis also noted that Yancey’s leadership role in JROTC further demonstrates his character.

Yancey has served as the Halifax County High School JROTC Battalion Commander since August, presiding as the top Cadet out of 102 members of the school organization. It is a position of leadership that requires him to provide guidance and mentorship to his peers in the program, and as the Battalion Commander, he assumes responsibility for the successes or failures in the program.

“Every day, Yancey demonstrates his understanding of what it means to be a leader and set the standards for those under his command. As a leader among his peers, Yancey automatically assumes a role model position, a role he takes seriously,” said Scott.

Yancey will be joining the Army Reserves the second week in June. He plans to attend VMI after completion of his basic and advanced individual training.
