HCSA line fix won’t be cheap

Directors of the Halifax County Service Authority discussed four options Tuesday for improving the water quality of some 40 customers in the Town of Halifax who live on Maple Avenue, Buena Vista Drive and Lakeshore Drive. The long-term solution would be the most expensive — costing an estimated $450,000.

IDA eyes $1.5 mil for new center

The Halifax County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) on Friday afternoon approved several resolutions following a four hour-plus closed session. Among the actions was a request to the Virginia Tobacco Commission for $1.5 million to establish a model facility at Riverstone Technology Park for the wood and metal coatings industry.

Halifax County planning meeting cancelled

The Dec. 21 meeting of the Halifax County Planning Commission has been canceled, according to County Zoning Administrator Robert Love.

Due to cost-cutting measures in state government, Halifax County and other municipalities around Virginia will start having to pay premiums into a state fund for all public safety workers — everyone from deputies to courtroom security to volunteer firefighters.

Halifax County Supervisors tonight are expected to discuss a new state mandate requiring that localities pay the health insurance premiums of each volunteer and public safety employee of the county who may face injury or death in the line of duty.

Some 30 people turned out for an informational meeting and public hearing Monday night on a 49.95 megawatt wood-fired power plant that economic development officials are hailing as a “good fit” for Halifax County.
