Tuesday’s municipal elections drew little interest from voters as both the towns of South Boston and Halifax fielded uncompetitive slates of incumbent candidates seeking Council and mayoral seats.

Halifax County supervisors tackle long list of topics

The Halifax County Board of Supervisors took little action but covered a wide range of topics at its Monday night meeting, with members receiving an update on plans for the 100th anniversary of the Halifax County Fair, discussing the allocation of stored water resources at Kerr Reservoir and reviewing a proposed increase in fees at the regional landfill authority.

Tobacco Commission approves Riverstone funding request

The Virginia Tobacco Commission on Thursday approved an award of $471,000 to the Halifax County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) for upgrades to Riverstone Technology Park.

Prospects for library budget uncertain

Halifax County Library board members delayed taking action on a budget for the coming year on Tuesday after Library Director Rhonda Griffin advised that she is still not sure just how much the library system will receive in state funds for the coming year. However, Griffin said she fears the state reductions, along with local cuts, may total between $20,000 to $25,000.

IDA moves forward on Riverstone sites

Plans for the development of six sites at Riverstone Technology Park were updated on Friday morning as the Halifax County IDA Board of Directors met with Robert Mitchell of Mitola, LLC. Mitchell advised IDA members that bids were going out for a complete design for lots 1, 7 and 8 to be pad ready for prospects with site ready plans also going out for lots 2,3 and 4.

Planning commission will meet Tuesday

Halifax County Planners will hold their regular monthly meeting tomorrow night, April 27 beginning at 7 p.m. with the presentation of a resolution honoring Hunter Ford for his many years of service on the Planning Commission.

Resolution pays tribute to late Alex Williamson

Halifax County and South Boston and Halifax town officials on Monday night presented Betty Williamson and her son John with a plaque recognizing the many contributions of her husband, Alex Williamson, who died in a bizarre accident last month. The plaque was presented by Board Chairman William I. Fitzgerald, South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston and Halifax Vice Mayor Dick Moore. See story, page 5.
