Planning commission will meet Tuesday

Halifax County Planners will hold their regular monthly meeting tomorrow night, April 27 beginning at 7 p.m. with the presentation of a resolution honoring Hunter Ford for his many years of service on the Planning Commission.

Resolution pays tribute to late Alex Williamson

Halifax County and South Boston and Halifax town officials on Monday night presented Betty Williamson and her son John with a plaque recognizing the many contributions of her husband, Alex Williamson, who died in a bizarre accident last month. The plaque was presented by Board Chairman William I. Fitzgerald, South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston and Halifax Vice Mayor Dick Moore. See story, page 5.
Halifax County supervisors, along with town council members of South Boston, Halifax, Scottsburg and Virgilina, honored the late Alex Williamson by presenting his wife Betty and son John with a framed resolution citing his many contributions to the community.

Officials ponder strategies

The 50,000-acre stored water supply of Buggs Island (Kerr) Lake is moving to the forefront of a debate over how Virginia and North Carolina should allocate water resources. On Monday evening John Feild, chairman of the Roanoke River Basin Bi-State Commission, alerted Halifax County supervisors and town councils of South Boston and Halifax of ownership issues looming over the water.

Advice given in time for tick season

Halifax County supervisors and Town Council members from South Boston and Halifax received a short lesson Monday night on what to look for as the tick season gets in full swing. One supervisor, J. T. Davis, said he pulled off 27 of the tiny little insects that he found crawling on his skin the previous day.

Mark Estes, with the Halifax County Service Authority, has been elected president of the Virginia Rural Water Association. He was elected as an at-large board member in 2008 and has served on the legislative and membership committees for the association.

Tobacco Commission trims county’s request for Riverstone funding request

Halifax County’s request for $2.25 million to upgrade electrical capacity at Riverstone Technology Park was knocked down a few pegs by a Virginia Tobacco Commission panel on Thursday.
