HCHS all-stars honored

Halifax County High School held its annual All-Star Reception Monday, recognizing the achievements of students during the school year. One hundred and eighty-nine students at Halifax County High School were designated as “All-Stars 2010” during a banquet and ceremony at the high school on Monday evening. Eight of those students were deemed “Four Time All Stars 2010” and twenty others were named “Three Times All Stars 2010.”

Davis named Teacher of the Year

A fifth grade teacher at South Boston Elementary School on Tuesday evening was named the 2010 Division Teacher of the Year. Patricia Davis, who has been teaching children for the past 23 years, was selected for the honor from among the ten teachers who were nominated from each of the county schools as their “Teacher of the Year.”

Halifax SWCD hosts annual youth conservation camp

The Halifax Soil and Water Conservation District hosted their Annual Youth Conservation Camp at Staunton River State Park on Thursday, May 13. Approximately 120 seventh-graders attended the camp and enjoyed learning about natural resources.

HCHS Envirothon team places third overall in state competition

Ground school summer camp

The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) last week displayed two aircraft at the high school, hoping to interest students, 15 and older, in their summer camp which will allow them to take a five day course preparing them to take their sport pilot written exam. A sport pilot can fly light sport aircraft in the daytime in good weather. Shown above are Paul Jackson and Mark Stevens with his ultra pup airplane.

Efficiency review wins backing of School Board

The Halifax County School Board on Monday night voted to proceed with an efficiency study that members hope will generate savings over time for the system. The vote, however, was not unanimous as as two trustees voted against the proposal. Six supported the study.
