Bonuses on the way for Halifax County school employees

Halifax County school employees will have to wait a little longer for federally-funded bonuses after the School Board on Monday night delayed final action on Superintendent of Schools Paul Stapleton’s recommendation to spend the $1.57 million stimulus money, recently awarded to Halifax County, to boost compensation of school employees.

Trustees reject VASS efficiency study

Halifax County School Board chool trustees on Monday night defeated a motion made by ED5 trustee Roger Long to negotiate a contract with members of VASS (Virginia Association of School Superintendents) to carry out a school review or efficiency study for the local school system. Long’s motion failed on a 5-3 vote.

Dollar General continues partnership with HCPS

Dollar General announced on Thursday that it is partnering with Halifax County Public Schools to give three books to every child in all the County's elementary schools for the next three years. The donation from Dollar General amounts to a total of $55,440 with 8,400 books to be given to 2,800 students each year.
Officials with the Dollar General Company on Thursday morning announced that they will continue their partnership with Halifax County Public Schools and the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation by giving each child in the County’s elementary schools three books each year for the next three years.

Pre-K art classes raising money for supplies

A public-school student in last year’s Pre-K Arts Academy wields her paintbrush over extra-large paper. The program, which immerses four-year-olds in the fine arts, needs funds to replenish its consumable supplies like paint, paper and clay.
Busy little hands go through lots of consumables in a school year: white glue (almost three gallons), tissue paper (sheet upon sheet), paint (more than you can imagine), modeling clay (by the case). The Prizery Pre-K Arts Academy, the unique program for four-year-olds operated for Halifax County Public Schools, is fund-raising for its materials budget.
