The 21th Annual Ecology Meet was held at the John H. Kerr Reservoir in Boydton, on April 21. The Halifax County Middle School and Halifax County High School teams placed first in the overall competition. Team members studied extensively and met weekly in preparation for the competition. Faculty advisors are Bedford Clements and Cassie Prevett (Halifax County Middle School), Andrea Lord and Ginger New (Halifax County High School).

Shooting Stars 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run Saturday

ON THEIR MARKS: THIS SATURDAY — The Shooting Stars 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run is set for this Saturday morning, April 24, at South Boston Elementary School. Registration forms are available at the school. Adult entry fee is $15 prior to the day of the race; $20 the morning of the race. Children (ages 12 and under) in the 1-Miler register for $5. The 1-Miler kicks off promptly at 8:30 a.m. with the 5K to follow. In addition to the overall winners, awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in 10 age divisions. Fun Run participants will receive a medal and a T-shirt. All children will be entered into drawings for prizes such as a RipStik and Wal-Mart gift cards. Getting on their marks are South Boston students and parents, front, left to right, Ella Morrison, Henry Morrison and Allen Johnson; on the back are Jeni Binner, Emilia Bitar, Jamey Binner, Ford Morrison, Harvey Johnson, Barbara Edgar and Ryn Morrison. The Halifax County High School National Honor Society inducted its new members Wednesday evening at a special program at the school. Halifax County Trustees appoint committee to study possible efficiency study

Halifax County School trustees on Monday night voted unanimously to appoint a committee to study the feasibility of conducting an efficiency study of County schools. ED8 Trustee Joe Gasperini first requested that such a study be carried out, a request that was supported by ED6 Trustee Fay Satterfield, who said her constitents and members of the Board of Supervisors had asked her to consider such a move.

The Halifax County School Board will meet Monday for their regular monthly session in the second floor meeting room of the Mary Bethune Complex, will recognize winners of several competitions.

SVHEC formalizes partnership with international institution

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) has joined with the Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Letterfrack, Ireland. While the SVHEC has been working informally with the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Letterfrack campus for over a year, the MOU formalizes that partnership and opens the door to future collaborations and student and faculty exchanges.
