A Halifax County deputy who stopped an armed assailant at the VFW Post in Halifax went without back-up as the first officer to respond to the scene for a reported traffic tie-up, according to Halifax Town Police Chief Kevin Lands.

Six people were wounded after an armed man fired into a crowd of people early Sunday morning at the VFW Hall on Route 501 in the town of Halifax. Among the injured was the armed assailant, who was shot by a county deputy who responded to the scene. One other person is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
