Strong winds crumpled this shed near Buffalo Junction.
Areas in the eastern part of Halifax County suffered significant damage from a fast-moving storm that toppled trees and felled utility lines early Wednesday morning. Two injuries were also attributed to the storm, one requiring hospitalization at UNC Hospital.

Library gains use of county van for bookmobile visits

Library directors on Tuesday afternoon got the good news that Halifax County has a van that it is willing to provide to the library for its exclusive use. “This is just great news,” said board chairman Lisa Crews, noting that the board has been agonizing over the lack of a vehicle to transport books to shut-ins and those unable to get into one of the local libraries.

Backhoe vandalized at former G-P site

A subcontractor working for Dominion Power had left his Caterpillar backhoe parked on the old Georgia Pacific property, located at the end of Plywood Trail in South Boston Oct. 19.

Thompson resigns Council seat after taking N.C. post

South Boston Council members, meeting for their monthly committee session, learned of the formal announcement that fellow Council member Sandra Thompson is resigning her position. In a letter dated Oct. 18, Thompson informed Mayor Carroll Thackston of her decision, which she attributes to the fact that she has accepted a position in North Carolina and will be living there during the week.

Trucker cited after ramming into school bus Wreck causes damages but no injuries

This 1993 Freightliner tractor trailer struck the rear of a Halifax County school bus early Thursday morning as the bus stopped to pick up students. Damages to the truck were estimated at $15,000.

A Portsmouth truck driver had been charged with reckless driving after ramming the rear end of a school bus early Thursday morning on U.S. 58 about four-tenths mile east of its intersection with State Route 708.

Trees downed by storm block roads in Virgilina area

Severe weather has caused many roadways to become blocked in the Virgilina community of Halifax County (primarily on US Hwy. 96). Commuters should use EXTREME caution when traveling in this area. Reports indicate as many as 10 trees are across Hwy. 96. The roadway is blocked by both trees, debris, and power/utility lines.
